While being treated paintings by Frida Kahlo often came to my mind. Whenever I look at 'The Broken Column,' for instance, I experience compassion. Now, I've started to paint myself, inspired by her and other artists. To me, painting works as a language in the cancer-context, as a journal medium and this blog as an illustrated journal of sorts.

Having some time this afternoon, I decided to paint a self portrait. I've been wanting to do one just to see my progress from the last one I did over six months ago. I would rather paint almost anything other than me, but the time had come to chart my progress. This was done from a photo rather than life, I can stay very still that way!

The title is "My Vanity" representing both my personality flaw and the physical surface where I apply make-up. The viewer may see only my reflection in the mirror, which represents how I choose to view myself and not my real face. My reflection doesn't show the wrinkles, sags, and spots that have developed with time and advanced age. If you look closely, you'll see a fly on the mirror base. 18th Century paintings used the flyas a symbol for death, which is my future. Oil on panel.

This "ugly" self-portrait represents the warped, negative way I view myself. The loathing, the shame, the hurt.
It's the "ugliness" deep inside manifested into a physical form. All the "issues" with
the way I look laid bare for the world to see.

My story as an artist is as many others, I think. I was drawing from the day I can remember. Hoping one day I could become an artist. I was born and raised in Leeuwarden (Holland) in 1962 but started my career as a graphic art designer. I always knew and felt that drawing and painting was the job to be. Inspired by Rembrandt, I read books about Rembrandt when I was a kid, and later influenced by Maris, Israels and Breitner I really started painting in 2006. I started to experiment with all kinds of mediums and felt that oil was the best medium to express myself. What I like in a painting is the game between light and shadows. That is an important aspect in my work. To create a balance between light and dark in order to get a certain atmosphere. This sometimes leads to commissions. At the moment I find myself painting more with soft edges. I discovered that soft edges emphasizes the mood I am looking for in a painting.

I took a photo of me, then did a dark painted background on canvas board. Then I drew small lined squares onto the canvas board and the enlarged photo. With bunches of catalogs and magazines I cut out coordinating patterns and colored squares til I was happy with the colors and placement for my self portrait. Then I glued them into place and coated the whole 20X16 canvas board collage with acrylic matte gel. I didn't work on this piece straight thru,it was over a few months. I love doing collage. Holed up in a Virginia hotel for three-plus hours. Watercolors in hand. I look around. Nothing interesting to paint. But, wait - there's a table in front of a mirror, there's a lamp to one side, and when I look straight ahead ..
Three-plus hours later, and I have completed my first self-portrait in watercolors. Life is good.

Although I've been drawing and painting for over 30 years, I'd never taken the time to paint myself. After participating in a portrait swap at the end of last year through Karin Jurick's blog "Different Strokes from Different Folks", I was inspired to give myself the gift of a self-portrait. I wanted to go for that serious, sensitive, "see through your soul look", but I think I just look like I'm going to cry. I think I should have left my glasses on. hehe

"The self portrait was the result of one of those occasions when you see a face in the mirror and suddenly realise it's your own! I felt very unwell with an approaching migraine and I thought the pain showed in my expression. With this portrait I think I finally accepted that migraines have and will probably always be a part of my life. As the pain subsides and I can get up and get on with my life, I try to embrace the fact that they force me to stop and appreciate the most important things in life - namely health and family."

This is a self portrait I did on nine mini canvases, each 4x4. Each canvas can be moved around. I thought this mixed up version was far more interesting than when they were assembled correctly. I did the portrait for a portrait show where they were going to pick the best ones to be on a calendar. My portrait made the cover! Never thought of myself as a cover girl, but I guess I can say that now.

It's funny..... I just blogged my self portrait las week. The name of this journal page is Just Me. It is an 8" x10" mixed media journal page. I spoke about how turning forty was a bummer to me but that something unexpected happened....... I found myself. Through the realization of no longer being " young" I discovered who I really was.

Welcome. I hope you feel comfortable here and will share your self portraits with the rest of us..... Even the ones you have thrown in the back of your closet or in your basement. I hope to see many submissions to this blog. Seeing each others' self portraits will be not only entertaining, but hopefully we can learn something from each other. All you have to do is email a sharp jpg with a title, size, medium and your name and blog or website address. If you'd like to give some background on the piece, that would be cool. Sorry, no photographs, no digital artwork. Only drawings and paintings.
If you recognize the painting below, you have seen it used as my avatar when I post comments on other artists' blogs. It's just part of the first self portrait I ever did, which was about two years ago. Well, that was the first painted sp. Really the first was a pencil drawing done in about 1972. I'll try to dig that up.
